Madisar – Iyengar Style

Learn how to drape a 10 yard or 9 yard saree in the classic madisar saree draping style as worn by Iyengar Brahmins in Tamil Nadu, illustrated in steps and in the video below.

 

Step 1. Wrap inner end of sari around waist clockwise and tie knot at right waist

Step 2. Lift lower border of inner end-piece and tuck in at left waist

Step 3. Make 5-6 pleats from right free end of the sari

Step 4. Spread out pleats across front and tuck in.

Step 5. Bring free end of sari around waist anti clockwise under right arm

Step 6. Gather 2-3 diagonal pleats from free end of sari and tuck into left waist

Step 7. Take free end of sari front to back between legs.

Step 8. Tuck in at centre back waist upto 12 inches

Step 9. Bring free end of sari around waist anticlockwise and throw over left shoulder.

 

Outer end-piece may be brought in front under right arm and tucked into left waist.
