  • How is a pochampally ikkat saree woven?

The design of the saree is first drawn on a graph sheet and then traced on to white mulberry silk yarn strung on a wooden frame. Then the white parts of the design are isolated by tieing the yarn using thin rubber stripes. The process of tieing and dyeing involves applying coloured dye on the coloured parts and the yarn is taken off the frame to repeat the process to apply other colours. Most sarees have 3 or more colours and higher the number of colours, the longer it takes to complete one saree. After the colouring is complete, the yarn is removed from the wooden frame and wound on spools for weaving in handloom pits, where the weaver assembles the dyed yarn together in the intended design to produce the final saree. The genuine ikkat sarees have a wavy edge to each colour boundary- this is possible only in tie and dye handwoven sarees as each yarn filament is dyed separately and then the saree comes together.
